Teflon™ Coatings on Aerospace Parts

Orion Industries has a deep understanding of the crucial role of Teflon™ coatings on aerospace parts. These coatings, with PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) being the most commonly used, are key in many aerospace applications. It’s essential to recognize that while Teflon is commonly equated with PTFE, there’s a distinction: Not all Teflon branded coatings are PTFE, and not all PTFE coatings are from Chemours™, the maker of Teflon coatings.

The Significance of Teflon™ PTFE in Aerospace

It’s common for engineers to specify Teflon™ coatings for aerospace parts because of their exceptional operating properties. For example, they provide very good temperature resistance with wide ranging performance capabilities extending from -400° to 500° degrees Fahrenheit, an essential characteristic for aerospace’s extreme operating environments. These characteristics make PTFE ideal for highly demanding applications – from cryogenic fuel systems to components exposed to high thermal stress.

Teflon also offers excellent electrical insulation with a dielectric strength of 750 – 1500 VPM (volts per mil). They have a very low coefficient of friction, and good abrasion, chemical and corrosion resistance, ensuring components operate reliably even under severe conditions. In aerospace and military applications, PTFE coatings help protect components exposed to heat, wear, and corrosion, enabling long-term storage and use of equipment without routine maintenance.

Teflon™ Coated Aerospace Parts

As an AS9100D with ISO 9001:2015 certified company, you can be assured that Orion is committed to maintaining the highest standards in our aerospace coating services. We have extensive experience applying functional coatings to a variety of aerospace components, ensuring they meet the demanding standards of the industry.

Here are a few examples of the use of Teflon coatings on aerospace parts:

  • Jet Strut Mounts: Teflon™ PTFE aerospace coatings are applied to curved titanium blades in jet engines and helicopter components requiring anti-vibration materials. This prevents galling and fretting, enhancing the durability and functionality of these critical parts.
  • Wire Mesh Cloth for Fuel Filters: We have developed advanced techniques to apply hydrophobic Teflon™ PTFE coatings to wire mesh cloth filters. Our precise, repeatable application ensures there’s no bridging between the mesh, for holes as small as .002” in diameter, maintaining the integrity and efficiency of filtration devices to protect fuel from water and other contaminants.
  • Filter Housings: Coated filter housings benefit from chemically resistant Teflon™ PTFE non-stick coatings. These coatings make cleaning easier, save labor, and prevent sticking, while also being robust enough to withstand abrasive fluid flows.
  • Seals: Teflon™ PTFE-coated seals are widely used in aerospace, particularly in cryogenic environments. It maintains low friction and dimensional stability at extremely low temperatures, making PTFE coatings especially well-suited for liquid oxygen, liquid hydrogen, and other cryogenic propulsion systems where seals must perform reliably during rapid thermal cycling and prolonged exposure to extreme cold.
  • Bolts, Fasteners, Rivets, and Screws: Orion provides comprehensive coating services for fasteners, including surface preparation and the application of corrosion and chemical-resistant Teflon™ PTFE coatings. Our precision masking and coating techniques are particularly effective in high-volume applications, ensuring each piece meets strict aerospace standards.

In the commercial aerospace industry, Teflon coatings are commonly applied to fasteners, bearings, fuel system components, engine parts, and even cabin hardware such as toilets and clamps. These coatings meet stringent industry standards like BMS10-146 and AMS2512.
